The Schwinn Men’s Wayfarer Hybrid Bike Review.

Every day I bike around a lot as do my other college mates in campus to get to lecture hall, library, cafeteria, book store and other places. Cycling has many benefits chief amongst them is the health benefit. Even a little bit of riding each day can make a big positive difference in our life.

Cycling offers very real health benefits, without requiring you to go out of your way to exercise, “Cycling is one of the best exercises I’d recommend,” says Corey Kunzer, a physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic’s sports medicine department. “It’s easy on the joints and helps relieve stress”. Dr. Clare Safran-Norton, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital says , ” It’s socially oriented, it’s fun, and it gets you outside and exercising,”

One of the health benefits of cycling is that it’s easy on the joints. Unlike walking where you put your weight on your legs, when you bike you put your weight on a pair of bones in the pelvis called the ischial tuberosities. “That makes it good for anyone with joint pain or age-related stiffness,” says Dr. Clare Safran-Norton.

Bicycle That My Friends & I used.

The bicycle model that my friends and I used in campus is Schwinn Men’s Wayfarer Hybrid Bike.

This is a seven speed derailleur bicycle with an upright riding position. This feature makes bike riding very comfortable for a flat to moderately hilly terrain. It feels efficient, secure and relatively nimble making it very suitable bike for a college campus, paved trails, and urban commuting for short to moderate distances. If you’re looking for a bike with a good value this is a fantastic bargain.

Standard Features.

This model comes with full fenders making it very convenient riding in all weather. It’s rear bike rack and chain guard is a major plus for me to protect my books, gym clothes, shoes or dinner that I purchased at the cafeteria.

This bike comes with a standard schrader valve tube that does not contain any type of leak prevention substance which is another plus feature.( A schrader valve tube is the same type of valve used on an automobile). So if you have a standard floor pump, you will be able to fill it with air without any type of adapter, or it could be filled at a gas pump, but it is not recommended as it can inflate the tube fast causing it to burst.

The steel frame is compliant and reduces road vibrations and the 700c wheels with 700/35 tires give a nice soft, smooth ride while being relatively fast rolling. Bottom line, it is a sharp looking bike with a great frame that would be worthy of a few component upgrades. But even as-is, it represents an excellent value for the casual bike rider. It’s really an amazing bike for a ridiculous price.

Looks & Functionality.

Schwinn Men’s Wayfarer Hybrid Bike is not only stylish and elegant, ( I received a lot of compliments on my bike ), it’s also very fun to ride. I especially like the upright riding position and the wide handlebars. The seat ( a cushioned saddle ) is comfortable and absorbs some shock from the bumps of the road. It’s easy on my butt.

The alloy brakes allow for precise stops. This is especially important as we are always in a rush to reach our destination and the stop break precision gives us confidence in occasional speed indulgence. All in all, this bike is a definite favorite. Great for casual riders and college students like me getting around campus.

Very little assembly is needed, when you initially purchased this bike. It took about an hour or two to get it up and running, no complicated stuff to put together but if you are not comfortable putting it together you can bring it to a professional bike mechanic for a small service fee. You can find them on Craiglist, it is probably way cheaper than the so called professional bike mechanic.

Maintenance wise, it is almost zero.

This bike is suitable for all ages, whether you are 17 or 71. It’s good for riding the neighborhood and for quick trips to the store. It’s also a good for working adults who live a few miles from their work.

Advantages of Biking.

Biking around is not only healthy but fun too. It’s like looking back wistfully on fond childhood memories of riding our bike around our neighborhood, wishing we could still be so carefree amid the rigors of adult life. We can observe our surroundings, listen to the birds and wave at passing cyclists as you ride the bike.

Most importantly for many of us biking saves time and money. Compare these three experiences:

  1. Driving a car, you sit in the traffic a lot especially during rush hour and then looking for parking space. And then you have to pay parking fees. I could use the savings to build a nest egg.
  2. Riding a bus. Well you need to walk to bus stop, waiting for bus, complaining about bus being late, paying bus ticket, staring blankly as it takes you round-the-block, arriving about a mile from your destination. Who needs that ?
  3. Biking. Get on the bike,> weave through the traffic,> lock the bike,> arrive at destination. How easy is that ?

Biking saves money. Compare this to owning a car.

What’s an average cost of maintaining a car in US ? According to the AAA, the cost of operation is an average of 56 cents per mile. AAA includes the cost of depreciation of a new car, more than $3,500 per year. And if you include car monthly payments, other maintenance, like regular oil change, tires replacement, brakes, batteries, insurance, tax, registration and more, the cost of owning and maintaining a car is around $8,500 per year ( more if it is a high end car ). Compare that to almost zero maintenance for a bicycle. So what is there not to like about biking ?

I once read cycling boost brain power. Exercise has been repeatedly linked to brain health and the reduction of cognitive changes that can leave us vulnerable to dementia to later in life. (What did I say now? I forgot. lol ). Albert Einstein once said he thought up the theory of relativity while riding a bicycle. See, now you’re getting smarter by doing what Einstein did.

I am an avid supporter of biking and love the overall handling of this model Schwinn Men’s Wayfarer Hyrid Bike. They do have the lady’s version too at slightly cheaper price tag. It’s called Schwinn Women’s Wayfare Hybrid Bike 4023D

So if you are ready to reap a long run benefits of biking, like improve overall health, strengthening of muscle, improve your brain power, save money and time, or simply having fun, get ready to pedal this reasonably priced bicycle.

If you’re online shopper like myself, Amazon.com has the best deals on this bicycle. I hope you enjoyed this review and if you have any questions about the Schwinn Men’s Wayfarer Hybrid Bike or want to leave your own personal review, leave a comment below.

Thank you.

  1. Hi ! I am myself 100% pro bike ! they are cost efficient, you can bring them pretty much everywhere you are going as it quite common nowadays, they do not arm the environment and they keep you in shape !
Since day one I am so happy that I switched for a bike !

    • Thanks Aurelien HENRY.

Yes that’s so true, biking is environmentally friendly in addition to cost efficient. Practically there’s no maintenance unlike cars, motorcycles, trucks or other modes of transportation. It doesn’t pollute the environment, no gas emission.
      Thank you for the comments.

  2. That is so cool that cycling is not as hard on your joints as walking. I had never heard that. I’m trying to do different things to get healthier and this sounds like a great idea after reading that.
You also made me miss my college days while I was reading! Enjoy it because in a lot of ways, your college years are the best years of your life!

    • Thanks Shiloh Griffin

Give biking a try and who knows you may even love it after a while. Its more fun if biking is done with a company , like family members or friends.

  3. I love Schwinns, growing up we had a few and are still in my parents barn. I couldn’t agree that biking does save money. In Copenhagen Denmark 62% of people bike to work. Only around 200 for a Schwinn is a great deal I may just get one and hide it in the basement for 20 years and sell it for 5 times the amount since I know our old ones held their value amazing!

    • Yes, I read somewhere a greater number of Europeans tend to bike around . Its definitely a healthy activity in addition to its being environmentally friendly.
You gave me an idea to keep my bike for several years as an investment rather than ‘junkyard ‘it and getting a new one.
      Thanks for the input

  4. I remembered the times when i was a kid and bikes with my friends. Now most of my friends don’t bike . It would be cool if i started again ( well as you said above you need company or else it’s boring!)

    • Hi George.
Ah Yes it was so much fun riding bikes with our friends in the neighborhood when were kids without a care in the world. If only time stood still for a while.
The good thing about biking is that there are so many local biking associations in your area to join and making new friends over there.

  5. I have been looking for a casual bike to go to the grocery store and run some small errands around town. I have a bad back and I like the more upright orientation of this bike. You are absolutely right about owning a car, it’s very expensive to own and maintain one. I do have to commute for work, but it’s nice to be able to get around town on a bike. Do you know what size the men’s bike is? I think I am probably on the taller side, so I would need a bike that is appropriate for me. Thanks for all the great information, I appreciate it.

    • Hi Steve

This bike is suitable for anyone between 5’5″ and taller . I am myself is 6’2″ and it is just right for me. The seat and handle bar are adjustable to accommodate a person’s height. I am guessing if someone who’s vertically challenged, like 5’4″ or below then this bike might not be suitable for him.

      Thank you for your question.

  6. Schwinn is a reputable manufacturer, and I would go with their models every time. Wayfarer looks awesome and based on your review it sounds great as well. It’s wort of taking a deeper look at it. Thank you. Ivan
